Many people often wonder how they can become a medical biller and what the educational requirements are. Medical billers are responsible for billing the insurance companies on the behalf of a patient. To become one, a person must have great organization skills and know how to multi-tasks. Here is the first step to becoming certified and what the course work looks like:
Online training- Students can pursue a certificate in medical billing and coding 100% online. Most of the online colleges will offer the same outline as traditional college settings. It is important for students to be careful about signing up with online schools that are regionally accredited. Students, in the beginning, will learn how to gather and enter data. They will also learn multiple other basics such as; generating reports, billing clients, electronic claims processing and posting payments. After completing the basic overview, students will be introduced to the different types of insurance coverage such as; Medicare, Medicaid, personal injury, workers compensation, workers compensation and Group Health. Student will then advance to a deeper understanding of common medical diagnosis including procedures and diagnoses. Students will also learn how to construct generated reports and how to use Internet resources.
The demand for medical billers is increasing because of the number of incompetent coders and billers. It is very important for the coder to correctly file for insurance, which is how most healthcare facilities are paid. Your success as a medical biller depends on the quality of the school attended and the amount of experience. Entry level medical coders usually start off at $28,000. In the third or fourth year of working as a coder, the salary will slightly increase to at least $34,000. There are different factors that determine the amount of income such as employer size, demand and employee credentials. States that have a large amount of nursing homes and hospitals often carry multiple job openings for a certified medical coder and biller.
Some employers are now looking for medical billers who are skilled in a particular subject or niche. Some employers will allow medical billers to work from home (although these types of jobs are not as plentiful as with traditional settings). For billers who work in a medical office, they can look to make around $12/hr their first year on the job. This rate increases to $16/hr (on average) after more years have been gained on the job.
Another place of employment for medical billers includes healthcare settings (such as home health care agencies). Billers also receive some of the best health care benefits. The most common health care benefits awarded to employees is medical, with dental following in second. There is also room for advancement, as many medical biller turn into managers. The medium salary for a medical billing manager is around $32,000-$50,000.
Future students that are looking to become a medical biller should pursue an online degree or check with their local community college for courses. Most medical coding classes don't have a wait list as with other careers such as Nursing.
